1969 NISSAN PATROL KL60
As off-road vehicles continue to surge in popularity, iconic models such as Jeeps, Ford Broncos, Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40s, and Land Rover Defenders have risen in both status and value. However, some exceptional and historically significant off-roaders have gone somewhat unnoticed yet are deserving of our recognition. Among these overlooked models is the Nissan Patrol, particularly the second-generation like the 1969 specimen on offer here.

The Nissan Patrol boasts a rich history and impressive off-roading capabilities, rivalling the other vehicles mentioned earlier. Outside the USA, the Patrol is often held in the same regard as the Land Cruiser, with fiercely loyal fans who trust these rugged trucks to get into and out of the toughest environments. The first-generation model entered production in 1951 and the Patrol is currently in its sixth generation, available in the USA as the Nissan Armada and Infiniti QX80. However, the Patrol’s relative obscurity in the USA can be attributed to the fact that only two of its six generations have been sold here - this second-generation model (sold in the USA from 1962 to 1969) and the current generation.

The second-generation hits a sweet spot for collectors. It introduced many welcome refinements over the bare-bones first generation, yet it still has the charming classic style of its contemporaries like the first-gen Ford Bronco and the Toyota FJ40. Power is supplied by a naturally aspirated P-series petrol 4.0-liter inline-six, rated at 140 horsepower and mated to a three-speed manual transmission with floor shift and 2-speed transfer case. Beyond the driveline, the Patrol used a simple body-on-frame construction and had equally simple solid axles front and rear, both supported by leaf springs. The proven setup ensured durability and excellent offroad performance.

This Nissan Patrol KL60 SWB LHD 2-door hard top wagon is one of just a handful of examples on our shores. It boasts a very good quality body-off restoration and is appealingly finished in Desert Tan with a white roof. The restoration is well detailed overall, with fully finished underbody and floors coated with Raptor lining for additional protection and sound deadening. The chassis is fully painted in black, and well detailed. It features factory steel wheels finished in white and fitted with proper dog-dish hubcaps and period-style off-road tires. Painted steel bumpers, a rear-mounted spare wheel, and rear ambulance doors round out the rugged, purposeful looks.

In keeping with its rugged purpose, the interior features hard-wearing black vinyl seat covers (including the rear jump seats), which are in good condition. Interior panels and floors are painted steel, ensuring its easy to clean after a day in the mud and muck of a jungle. Additional features include an add-on Hitachi radio and a heater. The Desert Tan and white top is removable, and the windscreen folds for the ultimate wind-in-the-face off road experience. The engine bay is authentically detailed without being overly fussy, with the big Nissan six finished in blue, and fitted with period-correct ancillaries and an oil bath air cleaner.

Overall, the restoration is well-executed, making the vehicle both functional and enjoyable to drive as originally intended. Moreover, as a Nissan Patrol, it is guaranteed to stand out in a gathering of vintage workhorses, particularly compared to the ubiquitous Toyota FJ40. Given the rarity of these vehicles in any condition, this marvelous Patrol is an unusual and intriguing find that’s sure to pique the interests of vintage off-road enthusiasts.
