1970 ALFA ROMEO JUNIOR ZAGATO
Alfa Romeo launched the striking 1300 Junior Zagato as an edgier, more focused, sporting alternative to the standard GT Junior, and reviving their long-standing relationship with the legendary design firm, Carrozzeria Zagato. Traditionally, Zagato-bodied Alfa Romeos were the reserve of circuit racers and rally drivers, but the Junior Z was designed from the onset to be a driver-focused road car. Based on the 1300 Junior Duetto roadster platform, the Junior Z was shortened in the rear, and clothed in a lightweight steel body with alloy panels. With its dramatic wedge-shaped, fastback styling and gutsy little 1300 cc twin-cam engine, the Junior Z was nimble, lithe, and an absolute joy to drive.
This excellent Junior Z is one of only a handful in the USA. It was previously owned and cherished by a series of devoted marque enthusiasts, notably among them “Mr. Alfa” Ken Shaff, best known as a co-founder of both Auto Week Magazine and the California Mille rally. Most recently, it was in the care of an experienced Alfa specialist and racer who has meticulously sorted it for reliable, fast-road enjoyment. It has been updated with a tuned 2-liter twin-cam engine, fitted with larger camshafts, along with a 4.56 limited slip rear end, alloy GTA-style T-arm, adjustable front upper control arms, and capped off with correct Cromodora 5-spoke alloys and fresh Pirelli CN36 radial tires. It is an absolute joy to drive, with outstanding performance allowing it to hang with much more powerful machinery on a twisty road.
