The Porsche 911 R is a great celebration and modern throwback to the driver-focused cars upon which the famous Stuttgart marque built its enduring legacy. The limited edition 911 R debuted at the Geneva International Motor Show in March 2016.

Under its hood lies the extremely well build 4.0-liter, naturally aspirated engine borrowed from the GT3 RS, delivering a thrilling 500 horsepower, exclusively paired with a six-speed manual gearbox.

Crafted by ZF to Porsche specifications, the new six-speed manual transmission contributes to the overall weight reduction, complementing elements such as the titanium exhaust, carbon fiber front fenders, decklids, and magnesium roof, all borrowed from the GT3 RS.

These components help trim the 911 R’s curb weight to 1,370 kilograms, approximately 50 kilograms lighter than the GT3 RS. For those seeking further weight savings, the air conditioning and stereo systems are optional deletions.

The 911 R inherits additional performance enhancements from the GT3 RS, including standard carbon ceramic brakes, electronically boosted rack-and-pinion all-wheel steering, and fully adjustable anti-roll suspension equipped with road-friendly dampers.

In a departure from the GT3 RS design, the 911 R swaps the towering GT3 wing spoiler for an underbody rear diffuser, enhancing high-speed stability while maintaining a sleek and unadulterated aesthetic.

And with only 991 units produced in 2016, it’s a rare sight on the road.

DRIVING EXPERIENCE

The 911 R can be seen as the ultimate 911 to drive. It has all the features of the circuit-oriented GT3 RS, but even slightly lighter and the highly sought-after manual transmission. The ultimate combination.

In short, the 911 R is an insane machine to drive. Everything feels like a real driver’s car. For both high speeds on the German Autobahn and the long and twisty bends in the Swiss Alps. An all-rounder and an absolute addition to any serious Porsche collection.

‘’The R delivers what computers can’t yet replicate—the human experience. The 911 R creates bliss through the challenge and reward that come from executing a complex task with easy grace. It’s the gratification of knowing a machine so intimately that every downshift becomes an unthinking, seamlessly rev-matched flurry of footwork and snorts from the flat-six engine. (An automatic rev-matching function is standard and can be turned off.)’’ – as written by Car and Driver.
