The Porsche 356 was first produced by Austrian company Porsche Konstruktionen GesmbH (1948–1949) and then by German company Dr. Ing. h. c. F. Porsche GmbH (1950–1965). It was Porsche's first production car and the Austrian company also designed the Cisitalia Grand Prix race car, the Volkswagen Beetle and Auto Union Grand Prix cars.
The Porsche 356 is a lightweight and nimble-handling, rear-engine, rear-wheel drive two-door car which was available both in both Coupé and Convertible configurations. Engineering innovations continued during the years of manufacture, contributing to its motorsports success and popularity. Production started in 1948 at Gmünd in Austria where Porsche built approximately 50 cars. In 1950 the factory relocated to Zuffenhausen in Germany and general production of the Porsche 356 continued until April 1965, well after the replacement model - the Porsche 911 made its debut in September 1965. Of the 76,000 356's produced, approximately half still survive.
The 356 T6 C was the pinnacle of 356 development, launched in 63 the ‘C’ featured four wheel disc brakes (first seen on the 2.0 Carrera 2), a more refined ride and excellent performance available as the ‘C’ with 75hp or as the ‘SC’ with 95hp respectively. Road and Track Magazine enthused over its comfort, quality and excellent performance, concluding “one would look a long time before finding a sports or GT car that offers more pure driving enjoyment”.
According to the Porsche Kardex record, this lovely RHD Porsche 356C 1600 Coupe - Chassis No: 129578 and Engine No: 713460 is a Fully 'Matching Numbers' and 'Matching Colour' car and was built on 27th April 1964 and exported to Porsche agent Lindsay in Johannesburg, South Africa on 23rd June 1964.
The record also states that its first owner was a Dr S E Boorany from Johannesburg. The last owner being Mr Peter Dorfer, Registrar of the Porsche 356 Registry in South Africa and also owner of Porsche dealer 'Carrera Motors' in Randburg, Johannesburg. It has received some cosmetic restoration in recent years by Carrera Motors - who closed down a few years back now, but the quality of this car is there for all to see.
We bought the car through a contact in South Africa and prior to shipping to the UK, it was fully re-commissioned and serviced by Porsche specialist 'Flat Six Performance' in Cape Town. The car is now showing 86,054 miles on the speedometer, which we are advised is its original mileage, but without an early paperwork on the car, we are unable to confirm this.
It is in beautiful condition throughout and drives superbly and it is believed to be one of only 300 RHD cars built in 1964 which does make it an exceptionally rare car indeed.
We are just in the process of obtaining UK registration with the DVLA and upon sale the car will be given a a new MOT (although now exempt) and it will come with our own 6 Month Mechanical Warranty.
Car on display @ our showrooms in Mortlake, SW London.
